Teen Drinking During Summer Months Leads to Accidents

July 15, 2020 | Category: DUI

“Summer is here and this is the time when teens may be in more vehicle accidents because of the influence of alcohol and drugs. We at Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. would like to share with you some thoughts from the CDC, Recovery.org, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to assist you in keeping your teens safe,” said Fort Myers Car Accident Attorney Randall Spivey.

Teen Drinking During Summer Months Leads to Accidents - Spivey LawThe 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that among high school students in the previous 30 days:

  • 30% drank some amount of alcohol.
  • 14% binge drank.
  • 6% drove after drinking alcohol.
  • 17% rode with a driver who had been drinking alcohol.

Recovery.org, an American Addiction Centers resource, provides educational content about alcohol and substance use disorders, as well as a directory of addiction treatment facilities across the United States. The organization believes “Summer, free time, and teens can equal a cocktail for trouble.” During this time, teens may be unmonitored and may experiment with alcohol and drugs.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) says, “Ending drunk driving begins with preventing underage drinking.”

“At MADD, we know that our hopes for a safer future are riding on tomorrow’s drivers. By getting today’s youth off to a good start, we are taking a giant step toward fulfilling our vision of a nation without drunk driving. That’s why we’re focused on tackling underage drinking, a problem that threatens the safety of our kids and endangers entire communities, now and down the road.”

The Power of Parents – “Communication is KEY! Parents are a youth’s leading resource when it comes to making healthy choices. This program helps parents use the power they have to keep their kids safe through ongoing, critical conversations with their children about alcohol and other drugs.”

The Power of You(th) – Youth also can play a pivotal role in underage prevention! They can stand up as the leaders who make it “ok” to say no to alcohol.”
