What to do about DUI accident injuries - SpiveyLawA University of Cincinnati (UC) study showed almost 9 percent of adults reported driving under the influence of alcohol; 4 percent of motorists drove under the influence of marijuana, and many adults also used both marijuana and other drugs in combination with alcohol. A large percentage of adults were identified as driving while under the influence of alcohol combined with inhalants (70 percent), cocaine (69 percent), and hallucinogens (65 percent). (Researchers used sample data from the 2016 to 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health for their study.)

"We need to focus our efforts on drugged driving, in addition to drunk driving, because drugged driving causes such a high level of fatalities," said study lead author Andrew Yockey, a doctoral student in UC's College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) said on February 1, 2022, that complacency toward drunk driving worsens the public’s safety. Statistics indicate that lives taken by someone else’s choice to drive impaired will reach the highest levels in over a decade while traffic safety enforcements resources have been cut across the country.

How does impaired driving cause an accident?

When drivers drink and/or take drugs, they can become drowsy, or fall asleep while driving. This may cause them to veer into oncoming traffic and cause head-on collisions or other potentially life-threatening accidents.

Alcohol also reduces a person’s vision, and the ability to comprehend traffic signals, traffic signs, and the actions of other motorists.

What injuries can occur in a DUI accident?

Many injuries can occur in preventable DUI accidents including:

  • Limb injuries
  • Soft tissue injuries
